China defeated Russia 26-24 in Ningpo, China. The lower-rated and younger mens team of Wang Hao, Wang Yue, Li Chao, Ni Hua and Bu Xiangzhi (team performance rating 2757) won 14.5-10.5 against E. GM Zoltan Almasi 2668 defeated GM Csaba Balogh 2624 2.5-1.5 in the final of the 16 player knockout Hungarian Championship. The Commonwealth Championship started at the weekend in Nagpur, India with over 250 entries including GM N. Short (ENG 2655), IM A. Wohl (AUS 2384) and IM G. West (AUS 2342). The first World Mind Sports Games is being held in Beijing, China October 3- 18. Australia has entered mens and womens chess teams.

Canfell needs a draw for his third and final IM norm but his opponent playing white must win for his IM norm. Xie plays the undefeated Smirnov. Leading scores in the 10-player supporting event  R. Samar 2216 4.5/6, J. Hu 2204 and V. Suttor 2172 each 5/7.

IM Tibor Karolyi, a former Champion of Hungary and teacher of GM Peter Leko,will give a lecture and simultaneous exhibition tonight at Manly-Warringah Leagues Club Chess Club. Leading scores after 41 of the 51 events in the 2008 Myer Tan Australian Chess Grand Prix  IM S. Solomon 124.36, IM D. Smerdon 85.00, GM D. Antic 57.94, FM G. Nakauchi 57.42, GM Z. Zhao 42.50, IM A. Toth 40.00.

The next GP tournament incorporating the City of Sydney Championship will be organised by the NSW Chess Association at Ryde- Eastwood Leagues club over seven rounds October 4-6. Dr Vladimir Zeldovich has won the final Hakoah Club championship at Bondi scoring 9/9 above Caroline Shan 7 and Jin Shan 6.5. The chess club after 40 years is moving to Eastern Suburbs Leagues Club in Bondi Junction with the inaugural tournament commencing on 20 October.

Roger Cook and Adrian Chek have each won their first four games in the 60-player Ford Memorial at Norths, Cammeray. The Rooty Hill RSL Club championship starts on Monday, October 6.The NSW Junior Chess League (contact Richard Gastineau- Hills 9412 4579) Spring one-day tournament will be held at Lidcombe on Wednesday, a two-day tournament and the NSW Girls Championship is on Thursday and Friday.
